Corbels and Viga Tails FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A corbel is an architectural feature that projects out from a wall or other vertical surface. They are often made of stone, wood, or metal and may be used as a structural support, to add detail and visual interest to the space, or both. Corbels come in a variety of shapes and styles and can be found in all styles of design from traditional to contemporary. Corbels can be used to accentuate mantels, ceiling beams, roof overhangs or columns in both interior and exterior spaces. Decorative corbels from Barron Designs are faux wood and are intended to be used for decorative purposes only.
Corbels from Barron Designs can be installed on either the exterior or interior of a structure. These faux wood corbels are made of all-weather, high-density polyurethane which means they can withstand even the harshest weather conditions and still look great! Whether you're looking to add a decorative touch to your roof line or dressing up a mantel, corbels provide a stunning and timeless look that will last for years to come.

Corbels from Barron Designs are made of molded high-density polyurethane. They are hollow on the inside which makes installation very easy. Simply cut a piece of lumber (typically a 2x4) that will fit inside the cavity of the corbel. Mount the lumber at the desired location by using desk screws and screwing it into the underlying studs. Slide the corbel over the mounting block and secure the corbel by running with deck screws through the side of the corbel and into the mounting block.

Slightly countersink the screws then conceal the screw head with caulk or wood putty. Use paint from the touch-up kit (for factory-finished products) to complete the job. Visit our Project Resources tab for detailed installation instructions.

Yes. These can be trimmed with any wood-cutting tools.
Unfortunately not. Our corbels are designed to add a decorative touch to any room. They are made from lightweight high-density polyurethane and are not intended to be load bearing, so it is important that you do not try to use them in this manner.
A viga tail is a short piece of a round wood beam that sticks out of an exterior wall, creating the illusion that it is part of the roof support. Viga tails are a distinctive feature in Southwestern architecture.

Viga tails can be installed in new construction or as replacements using either a threaded rod, or with adhesive. If using adhesive the viga tail will need to be nailed in place while the adhesive dries (about 24 hours). Detailed instructions are available under the Project Resources tab.
